For Digital News Industry, Short-Term Traffic May Not Yield Long-Term Results

Created by Kevin Ryan and Henry Blodget, Business Insider is one of the most popular entries in the digital publishing market. Its successes and setbacks have served as a living and breathing case study for other digital publications. Business Insider is an U.S.-based technology and business news website that analyzes the latest trends while aggregating many of the day’s top stories.

Along with BuzzFeed, Gawker, Forbes and The Huffington Post, the site has been an industry trailblazer by offering a blend of aggregation, free syndication and contributions, as well as original commentary and reporting. In late 2013, Business Insider was rumored to have put itself on the market to the tune of $100 million, but failed to attract any offers. Winter Influences Business Downturn

3-14-14-EconomyBusiness owners throughout the United States are feeling the effects of harsh winter weather. According to a Biz2Credit report studying 20,000 American businesses, revenues have fallen over the first two months of 2014. Biz2Credit connects business borrowers with lenders nationwide – more than 1,200 in 2013. The company compared data from the same time period in 2013.

Examining businesses in the Midwest and Northeast, Biz2Credit found that revenue for retail stores dropped 13 percent from last year. The warehousing and transportation industries are down nearly 11 percent. Construction also experienced a large drop: 9 percent.

Feeling the effects of the winter chill, retail stores are struggling to maintain their past fortunes. Macy’s has laid off 2,500 employees and close five stores throughout the United States. Target is trimmed nearly 500 jobs. In their latest store report, Kohls cited smaller levels of clearance merchandise and lower traffic. [Read more…]

Dover has previously worked as a project manager for General Homes of Houston, Texas, as well as for its parent company CBRE. Richard E. Dover was also an independent real estate developer until becoming general manager of Family Pride Corporation in 1993. Here Richard E. Dover discuses a recent community event held in conjunction with a renovation project in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Interviewing Experts: Welcome, Richard E. Dover! Tell us about what you and Family Pride are doing in Oak Ridge.

Richard E. Dover: We have started renovations on the historic Alexander Inn, an old hotel that housed scientists who were working on the atomic bomb with the top-secret Manhattan Project during World War II.

Interviewing Experts: Are you restoring it as a hotel?

Richard E. Dover: No, we are converting it into a high-quality assisted living facility.

Interviewing Experts: But it is a historic renovation, right?

Richard E. Dover: Yes, we are restoring its exterior and much of the interior to its original form.

Interviewing Experts: Was it always called the Alexander Inn?

Richard E. Dover: No, it opened in 1942 as the Guest House and once hosted such dignitaries as physicists J. Robert Oppenheimer and Enrico Fermi, and Secretary of War Henry Stimson.

Interviewing Experts: So tell us more about the recent estate sale.

Richard E. Dover: We had lots of rooms to clear since the Alexander Inn had been vacant for more than 20 years. Some truly historic furnishings were donated to local museums, but we wanted to offer some to the public as well.

Interviewing Experts: Was there a good turnout?

Richard E. Dover: Oh, yes! At about halfway, we estimated 500 people had already been through.

Interviewing Experts: Wow, that’s a great turnout!

Richard E. Dover: Well, it was an unprecedented opportunity to buy items from the 1940s to the 1980s, including bed frames and Bibles, chairs and chandeliers, and dishes and dressers. It also gave the public a rare opportunity to see inside the front part of the hotel before renovations begin.

Interviewing Experts: There must have been quite a crowd.

Richard E. Dover: At one point, the line of people waiting to get in stretched from the hotel, located on East Madison Road in Jackson Square, to Kentucky Avenue.

Interviewing Experts: Were you pleased?

Richard E. Dover: I was very pleased with the community support. Actually, I was stunned, almost speechless!

Interviewing Experts: Did you organize this sale yourselves?

Richard E. Dover: No, the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) organized the sale, in conjunction with Knox Heritage’s Salvage Room.

Interviewing Experts: And how about the redevelopment project itself—do you have partners?

Richard E. Dover: The ETPA helped make the hotel redevelopment project possible and the proceeds from Saturday’s sale benefited the nonprofit organization.

Interviewing Experts: Is this an official historic site?

Richard E. Dover: The Alexander Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and preservationists have worked for a decade or more to save it.

Interviewing Experts: Has there been any federal involvement?

Richard E. Dover: Yes, a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy helped make the project possible.

Interviewing Experts: Tell us more about what the new facility will be like.

Richard E. Dover: The center will cost $6.5 million to complete and will have 60 units, including a wing for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Stephen Pitz Promotes the Value of Fine Arts in Public Schools

Stephen Pitz has spent many years teaching students. Recently, Stephen Pitz made the decision to step away from teaching and focus on his goal of becoming an author and poet. His experience as a teacher convinced Stephen Pitz that fine arts are critical to student development.

According to Stephen Pitz, schools with arts and theatre programs teach students to think creatively. For this reason, Stephen Pitz believes that students need opportunities to learn how to use such creativity. Without such opportunities, Stephen Pitz believes that his own love of writing and poetry could never have grown to such great lengths. Fine arts are valuable tools that provide learning experiences for students, says Stephen Pitz.

Another argument for keeping arts and theatre programs in schools, according to Stephen Pitz, is that students will learn to spend their time more wisely. Many children spend countless hours each week playing video games for fun, but Stephen Pitz suggests that fine arts is a much more productive way to find enjoyment. Developing talent is a huge confidence builder, says Stephen Pitz, and without it, students are missing out on an important element of learning. Spending time productively is important to prepare for the real world, insists Stephen Pitz.

Stephen Pitz’ own experience in education has provided him the basis to give recommendations to school administrators for fine arts programs. For one, participation should be required for some amount of time. Students may not realize the benefits of participating without a push in the right direction. Keeping Our World Green | Joseph Merlo Supports Recycling

Joseph Merlo, founder of Energy Automation Systems, Inc., is an energy expert with a vested interest in conserving resources and greening the planet. Joseph Merlo put together some tips for readers to help minimize waste.

Every day, begins Joseph Merlo, Americans throw away plastic, electronics, paper, glass, and food. Joseph Merlo points to research that indicates that every year the amount of waste produced by Americans alone exceeds 700 billion pounds. Joseph Merlo says this is over a ton of trash for every single American citizen! Joseph Merlo says managing waste is a central consideration of the green movement. The volume of waste may seem overwhelming, notes Joseph Merlo, but the solutions aren’t. Joseph Merlo adds there are habits that every consumer can practice to ease the burden of waste on our environment.

First off, Joseph Merlo encourages reusing bags and containers. Joseph Merlo suggests reusable canvas totes bags for grocery trips. Every shopping experience, says Joseph Merlo, does not need to produce new bags. Joseph Merlo knows from personal experience that it does not take long to get used to bringing bags to the store. Once that habit is set, explains Joseph Merlo, hundreds of pounds of waste stand to be avoided.

Another way to reduce packing materials, suggests Joseph Merlo, is to buy in bulk. Joseph Merlo says many items, from food to carpentry nails, can be purchased from bulk bins. Rather than buying cans of beans, Joseph Merlo suggests buying a couple pounds of beans in bulk. They may take longer to cook, says Joseph Merlo, but that’s a small price to pay to save some cans. Besides, adds Joseph Merlo, they’ll taste better than canned beans any day. Also, Joseph Merlo notes that most household products can be purchased in bulk. Joseph Merlo explains buying a lot of detergent, rice, or dog food at one time costs the consumer less and creates less waste from packing materials. Joseph Merlo adds that concentrated products, like fruit juice concentrate and concentrated laundry detergent, also use less packaging material than regular strength products.

In the home, instructs Joseph Merlo, switch to reusable products wherever possible. Joseph Merlo suggests that rather than crumpling paper napkins with meals, grab a cloth napkin. When a cloth napkin becomes too dirty to use, says Joseph Merlo, toss it in the laundry rather than the trash. Joseph Merlo also suggests using sponges and dishcloths in place of mounds of paper towels. In keeping with the reusable philosophy, Joseph Merlo recommends rechargeable batteries to eliminate the toxic waste produced from disposable battery cells. Once a rechargeable cell outlives its usefulness, Joseph Merlo reminds readers it may still be recycled instead of trashed. All of these are small daily steps, concludes Joseph Merlo, that help everyone strive toward minimal waste.
