Although Pop Warner Football is popular nationwide, Mario Romano Colts Neck is focused on teaching youth the history of the program. After bringing Pop Warner football to Colts Neck, Mario Romano learned about the organization’s humble beginnings. “Pop Warner Football was created in response to about a hundred broken factory windows back in 1929,” Mario Romano Colts Neck explains. Much like Mario Romano has done in Colts Neck, Joe Tomlin set out to create an outlet for the athletes of Northeast Philadelphia. It wasn’t much at first, but it grew quickly, something Mario Romano experienced with the Pop Warner program in Colts Neck.

With all the damage done to local factory windows, Mario Romano Colst Neck says the owners were willing to give Joe Tomlin the funds necessary to start a league. “It wasn’t called Pop Warner like it is today in Colt’s Neck,” notes Mario Romano, “it was first created as the ‘Junior Football Conference.’” Mario Romano Colts Neck detailed the way in which the Junior Football Conference grew from four teams to sixteen in only four short years. The expansion was reminiscent of the type of growth Mario Romano’s Colts Neck league recently experienced.

“Soon after the expansion, Pop Warner came to speak at a banquet,” Mario Romano Colts Neck details. According to Colts Neck leader Mario Romano, ‘Pop’ was the only one out of a dozen speakers who made it to the banquet due to hazardous weather, and he instantly won over the 800 young athletes present. “The league was renamed that night,” explains Mario Romano, “and Colts Neck can thank this event for the Pop Warner name they take pride in today.” The league has developed the Pop Warner name into a prestigious brand in communities like Colts Neck, where Mario Romano helped create a new league. Prior to the building of league tradition, Pop Warner’s name drew athletes into the leagues like Mario Romano helped to organize in Colts Neck.

Over the next four years an outrageous amount of growth occurred, as Mario Romano Colts Neck details. “With the Pop Warner name, the league expanded to 157 teams in 1938,” says Colts Neck resident Mario Romano. The league experienced a sharp decline and then a sizeable rebound over the next couple years. Mario Romano of Colts Neck tells of another important date in Pop Warner Football history; “In 1959, Pop Warner was officially incorporated nationwide as a non-profit organization.” From 1959 to the present, Pop Warner Football has expanded to include over 300,000 boys and girls in places just like Colts Neck, where Mario Romano was instrumental in the creation of a program.
