Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon Discusses Certification Processes for Kosher Gelatin

KSA-Kosher-GelatinAccording to Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon, gelatin is one of the most complex food products introduced for kosher certification. Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon attributes the confusion about kosher gelatin to the various definitions provided by American companies and certification agencies. Below, Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon helps to explain the different food sources of gelatin.

Q: Where is gelatin derived?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Gelatin is typically derived from collagen in the bones and skin of animals. It can also be produced from the skins of kosher cattle.

Q: Kosher gelatin is not vegetarian then.

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: For vegetarians, both kosher and non-kosher gelatin presents issues. In some cases, gelatin is considered vegetarian.

Q: How so?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Kosher gelatin can be produced using vegetarian sources such as agar-agar, Japanese isinglass, carrageenan and Irish moss.

Q: What kinds of animals are used in the production?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Manufacturers never produce kosher gelatin made from pigs or any other non-kosher animals.

Q: What about fish?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Certain kinds of shallow-water fish or shellfish are strictly forbidden. However, deep-water fish is permissible for the production of kosher gelatin.

Q: Have manufacturers maintained observance of kosher laws?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Most manufacturers who produce kosher gelatin have used substitutes.

Q: What are some of these substitutes?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Substitutes include seaweed-based products or fish-bone gelatin. Further, kosher milk chocolate has, at times, been produced using kosher beef gelatin.

Q: How is this possible given kosher laws?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Kosher laws prohibit the production or consumption of milk and meat together; however, the processing of gelatin and milk, according to some opinions, may be acceptable for consumption.

Q: What are the health benefits of kosher gelatin?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: Kosher gelatin has several health benefits; it is fat-free, sugar-free and an excellent product for strong bones.

Q: Is kosher gelatin appealing to the general public?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: It’s actually an essential ingredient in many delicious dishes.

Q: Tell us more.

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: For example, kosher gelatin is found in desserts such as no-bake cheesecakes, chocolate mousses, chiffons, parfaits and custard gels that are popular with kosher and non-kosher consumers.

Q: How is gelatin sold in the supermarket?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: In the past, gelatin was only available in large packages. However, gelatin is now sold in consumer-sized servings for use in home baking and cooking.

Q: Has KSA experienced any issues with kosher certification for gelatin?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: The problem in most cases is that different companies and agencies have not clearly defined what kosher gelatin truly means.

Q: How should the kosher consumer approach kosher gelatin?

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon: The kosher consumer must examine an agency’s policies and what specific certifications mean. For example, each product submitted to KSA undergoes rigorous testing so that the consumer is assured of its quality.

Rabbi Binyomin Lisbon is the top administrator of Kosher Supervision of America (KSA), which currently ranks as the leading kosher certification agency in the Western United States.

Telecommuting as the New Business Trend

interviewing-expertsWorking from home has become an increasingly popular option for those employees who desire freedom from the traditional 9-to-5 routine. A number of misconceptions about telecommuting have circulated in recent years, so a few facts are necessary to explain further.

Although telecommuting offers the freedom of working at home, keep in mind that it often requires additional hours. According to a number of studies, telecommuters work an average of six additional hours each week. Since an employee is working at home, clients, customers and employers believe that telecommuters are available at all times. Often it becomes difficult to establish boundaries between home life and work. When choosing to work from home, determine a set time when work activities must be completed and stick with it as much as possible.

Similarly, telecommuting requires an individual to have a certain level of discipline. When working in an office, an individual’s mere presence is often considered good enough for his or her superiors. However, telecommuters are usually held to greater standards than office employees because of a lack of visibility. Working from home means that an employee is still accountable for completed work even if the daily schedule has flexibility.

For some telecommuters, working from home feels lonely and isolating. Those who need a little socializing during the workday would do well to schedule a lunch date with friends to reenergize and refocus.

The perils of working from home also include the inability in most cases to pursue job promotions. At the managerial level, it is hard to justify working from home when employees depend on consistent attention. An individual’s salary can stagnate as a result.

It is important to note that telecommuting also carries a few attractive benefits.  Telecommuting reduces a number of costs associated with full-time employment. It can save on transportation costs, clothing expenses and restaurant bills. Telecommuters also avoid expensive childcare costs, though many workers still seek out assistance on a regular basis. Having children around will generally create distractions that take away from the task at hand.

This new business trend requires a significant effort for an employee to telecommute successfully. However, the ability to work from home allows an individual to build a private space. This often leads to more efficient operations, which is a desired result for all involved.

A Conversation with Wesley Upchurch on the History of Video Games

Wesley Upchurch

Wesley Upchurch

Today we talk to Wesley Upchurch about the history of video games. Wesley Upchurch is the owner/operator of Gunther’s Games in Columbia, Missouri.

Interviewing Experts: We sort of take it for granted that video games have been around forever. How far back do they really go?

Wesley Upchurch: Farther than I thought, really; all the way back in 1947. An engineer filed a patent on a “cathode ray tube amusement device.”

Interviewing Experts: Wow! What was that primitive video game like?

Wesley Upchurch: The player had a WWII-style radar screen and could fire at “airborne” targets by using buttons and knobs.

Interviewing Experts#: Did it ever make it to market?

Wesley Upchurch: No, but the ball was rolling. Another television engineer had the idea of a home video game all the way back in 1951, but his boss killed the idea.

Interviewing Experts#: Well, what about computer video games?

Wesley Upchurch: Yes, there were computer video games for the earliest computers, but little is known about them since all those early, primitive computers are long gone. There was a game that came along in 1961, though.

Interviewing Experts: What game was that?

Wesley Upchurch: The game was called Spacewar, and it was developed by students at MIT. It was a two-player game involving spacecraft, missiles and stars.

Interviewing Experts: Wow, that sounds a lot like later arcade games.

Wesley Upchurch: Yes, and it was patented and even swapped among universities, as that’s pretty much the only place that had early computers back then. They were for the old PDP-1 computer, for Electrical Engineering departments of colleges.

Interviewing Experts: When did home games start to come around?

Wesley Upchurch: That was in the 70s, when the first generation of video games came to the market. The Magnavox Odyssey was just about the first on the scene back then.

Interviewing Experts: What were some of those early game titles?

Wesley Upchurch: Space Invaders, Galaxy, Gun Fight were all really early games. They were simple and primitive, but that’s what broke the market open and pointed the way.

Interviewing Experts: Well, when did the arcade game come online?

Wesley Upchurch: Remember that there had always been arcade games, but all-electronic arcade video games didn’t really get their start until 1978.

Interviewing Experts: What was the groundbreaking arcade game, then?

Wesley Upchurch: No question, it was Space Invaders. It was huge for the time. They went on to sell over 360,000 arcade cabinet versions of that game.

Interviewing Experts: What were the other games in that first generation?

Wesley Upchurch: Galaxian, Pac-Man and Asteroids were also in that first wave of games. The technology advanced really quickly from there, though.

Interviewing Experts: Yes, they’re a pretty far cry from what came later.

Wesley Upchurch: Run-and-gun games, cinematic platforms, action role-play games were all in the next wave.

Interviewing Experts: I imagine modern kids would get bored with those early games pretty quickly.

Wesley Upchurch: Yes, but there’s always going to be a nostalgia aspect to playing them, too. You’d be surprised how many older players just love putting in time on a Frogger or Defender game!

The Benefits of Asset Management

Q: What types of asset management are there, and why is their growth important?

A: There are many forms of asset management. These include physical asset management, fixed assets management, infrastructure assets management, IT asset management and digital asset management. The best asset management should achieve a number of different goals.

Operating and sustaining these assets within a budget requires some form of prioritization. First, it must help managers maximize the potential of their assets. It must also indicate which assets need further attention, along with the assets that have failed to produce.

Quite simply, asset management encourages all involved to seek better value from the company’s assets. In the end, this process will increase productivity and improve competitive performance.

Q: What tools are necessary in asset management?

A: The tools used for asset management should offer the calculation of risks associated with assets. They will also provide necessary data storage and an accurate control over inventory. Given constantly changing technology and the wealth of competition, smart decision-making is crucial in asset management.

The most successful asset management requires that both the intangible and physical assets of an organization are used to their fullest potential. This strategy runs across any number of disciplines, from engineering to production, to administration and information management.

Q: How should a company start the asset management process?

A: Asset management growth doesn’t happen overnight. Although the process might seem difficult at first, the results are worth it. Asset management continues to undergo an evolution, and the most successful industry experts will comprehend this. Only then will the strongest results for the whole organization be possible. Both production and labor will be more efficient, the cost of owning fixed assets will be reduced, and the downtime on facilities and equipment will be minimized.

At this point, a company is then given the chance to address areas that require improvement, asking for assistance from its trusted management solution experts to use beneficial management tools. Many public asset management firms provide help in establishing an effective process.

Charles Brennan, a Las Vegas, Nevada based entrepreneur, philanthropist, and longtime rock and roll enthusiast recently opened the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy with the Boys and Girls Club of Sioux Empire.  With a little help from several big-name friends, Charles Brennan presented a weeklong celebration to mark this grand occasion. Here, Interviewing Experts talks with Charles Brennan about this new program for kids.

Interviewing Experts:  Thanks so much for joining us today!  Please tell readers about this phenomenal program.

Charles Brennan:  This program means the world to me.  Through the Rock and Roll Academy, we are giving kids in need access to music lessons, equipment, and performance opportunities.

Interviewing Experts:  How did the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy come to be?

Charles Brennan:  I was in the business for years and have made some really good friends in the music industry.  After discussions with Alice Cooper and my son, who attended the School of Rock in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy was born.

Interviewing Experts:  Were you a performer?

Charles Brennan:  No, I never mastered an instrument, so I managed bands, opened a venue and promoted concerts.

Interviewing Experts:  Why Sioux Falls?

Charles Brennan:  I’ve lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for years, but Sioux Falls is my hometown.  I am so fortunate to be able to bring this program to kids in my old neighborhood.  I grew up just 6 blocks from the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy.

Interviewing Experts:  How do kids get involved?

Charles Brennan:  The Rock and Roll Academy will serve the kids who are members of the Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire.

Interviewing Experts:  Tell readers exactly what kids will be learning at the Academy?

Charles Brennan:  Everything we do will be focused on rock and roll.  Kids will take weekly music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals and will rehearse with a band each week.

Interviewing Experts:  Will the kids perform as well?

Charles Brennan:  Yes, kids will have the opportunity to perform in front of a live crowd, just like real rock stars.

Interviewing Experts:  Incredible!  Tell readers what happened during the grand opening week.

Charles Brennan:  Some of my good friends performed to help open the Rock and Roll Academy in style.  George Lopez, Louie Anderson, Night Ranger, the “Pawn Stars”, Alice Cooper, and some members of Ratt, Warrant, the Doors, and Motley Crew all made appearances.  Even Gene Simmons of KISS made a surprise appearance on March 30th and performed.

Interviewing Experts:  How did the community get involved?

Charles Brennan:  The kick-off concerts were open to the public.  The facility was open for tours on Friday and, with a phone call ahead, visitors are welcome anytime.

Interviewing Experts:  What are you hoping the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy will accomplish?

Charles Brennan:  At the very heart of this program, we are committed to helping kids dream big and be successful in life.  Maybe they become rock stars, maybe not.  The journey, through lessons, teamwork, and performance, will give them skills that will guide them through life.  That’s what’s important.

Matt Schilit on Incorporating iPads into the Life of a School Administrator

Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit is a longtime school administrator, having served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.  In his current position with the Allendale County School District in South Carolina, Matt Schilit supervises all data, evaluation and testing. Since testing is an integral part of a school’s funding, it is important for school systems to find leaders such at Matt Schilit with extensive experience in the classroom environment.

Recently, Matt Schilit sat down for a conversation about the exciting new opportunities that technology, such as the Apple iPad, can bring to the school administrator’s job performance.

Interviewing Experts: Matt Schilit, you have voiced a great deal of enthusiasm about the Apple iPad. How is it so different from a laptop computer?

Matt Schilit:  It is the portability and wide variety of applications that set the iPad apart.  It used to seem so easy to bring a laptop into a meeting but now even that seems clunky and old-school!  The iPad is so small I can take it with me wherever I go and access all its amazing applications.

Interviewing Experts: Matt Schilit, what kind of applications do you refer to?

Matt Schilit:  With communication apps such as Skype and Google Talk, I can go anywhere in the school or off campus and still stay in touch with my staff, including every teacher in every classroom! And I am totally connected to the outside world as well.

Interviewing Experts: Matt Schilit, how about the increased ability to be away from your office; is there a downside to that?

Matt Schilit:  Not really.  With applications like Dropbox, Google Docs, and Docs to Go, I have access to all my documents stored in the Cloud. I can type a letter to a parent, save it to my Google Docs or Dropbox and have immediate access to that document using my Docs to Go app.  Back in the office I can then edit, print and send it.

Interviewing Experts: Matt Schilit, are you also able to access shared documents?

Matt Schilit:  Yes, of course.  With those same applications I have access to my entire professional document library, also stored in the Cloud.   I have immediate access to all official school documents such as the Student Handbook.

Interviewing Experts: Matt Schilit, is there any other plus to using this new technology?

Matt Schilit:  Well, besides the general boost to organizational efficiency, there is an image element as well.  Carrying and using an iPad as an administrator shows how much you as the leader embrace technology as it makes your job easier while you lead the school.  It’s inspiring to the teachers and students.

Matt Schilit holds a BA in Physical Education and a Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina.

Investing in a Startup

Over the past 15 years, it seems like all of the money in startups and entrepreneurship comes from the tech industry. And much of that money is made from websites that start with simple ideas and grow into huge international companies. Amazon, Facebook and eBay all had humble beginnings, but are now three of the most visited websites in the entire world. The success of these companies has led many people to wonder how they can get a slice of the pie for themselves. The answer is for investors to invest in startups.

Investing in these small companies that may not even have office space yet can be daunting. Someone may be putting their hard earned cash on the line to back a group of people who may not amount to anything. Or they could be about to create the next Google. But there are ways to tell if a company is a solid investment or too big of a risk.

Wise investors do business with companies in industries with which the investors are familiar. It wouldn’t make much sense to throw cash at a company that provides an education service when the investors know nothing about education. Without experience, it would be difficult to spot flaws in the business plan or execution of the product. By staying within a familiar niche, investors will have a more active role in the growth of the company and help guide it toward success.

Of course, no matter how much knowledge an investor has within a particular industry, there’s still a big possibility the project will fail—and the money will go with it. But by doing their homework and taking the time to identify the strongest startups with the most promise, investors can see a big return if they’re patient.

David Slone Offers Maintenance Tips For Your Car’s Health

David Slone

David Slone

David Slone is the General Sales Manager and Used Car Manager at Weld County Garage. Along with his service manager, David Slone has seen plenty of cars come in with problems that could have been avoided. In this Q&A discussion, David Slone offers up advice for keeping a car running longer and stronger.

Q: If you had to give one piece of advice for longevity for my car, what would it be?

David Slone: Change your oil at regular intervals. Keeping clean motor oil in your engine means that you won’t be building up deposits and gunk that can clog internal passages and wear down moving parts.

Q: What intervals do you recommend for servicing?

David Slone: For older cars, 3000-5000 miles is usually good; newer cars can go longer, up to 6000 or so, just be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.

Q: What about synthetic oils?

David Slone: Synthetic motor oils can go much longer, but you’ll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations on that.

Q: What about servicing my tires?

David Slone: This is another really simple one. Check your tire pressure when you gas up; underinflated tires affect your car’s drivability, ride and handling, and cost you money in lost fuel efficiency.

Q: I’ve heard that drivers should avoid short trips. Why is that?

David Slone: When a car’s engine cannot warm up to operating temperature, the water that’s produced in combustion can’t make its way through the crankcase ventilation and tailpipe, leading to diluted motor oil and other problems. If your trip is less than ten minutes, maybe you should consider walking…!

Q: I suppose that listening to your car for strange noises is sort of a given…

David Slone: Yes, definitely, any knocks, ticks, thumps or squeaks that are out of the ordinary. Don’t just let them slide – they could be trouble.

Q: What about driving habits?

David Slone: This one’s just common sense. Try to keep a light right foot on the accelerator, take it easy over rough roads or railroad tracks, brake gently, and don’t punish your car.

Q: And what about my car’s front end and tires?

David Slone: Get an alignment once a year, it’ll save your tires and improve a car’s handling. And make sure to schedule a tire rotation with every oil change.

Q: Driving habits affect fuel economy, too…what else can you suggest as far as gas mileage?

David Slone: Check your air filter regularly. It’s cheap and easy to change, and a clogged air filter will kill your car’s mileage and performance.

Q: Any parting ideas?

David Slone: Yes, stay on top of your regular maintenance and fix problems early if they develop. Think of it the same way you would your own body!

Q: David Slone, thanks for answering our questions!

David Slone: Absolutely, I hope these tips are useful.

In addition to his time at Weld County Garage, David Slone has put in over two decades as an entrepreneur. David Slone also served as Vice President and President of a firm that manufactures video editing equipment, Macrosystem US. There, David Slone led a management team that brought in millions of dollars in profits. David Slone loves a good challenge, making him a great fit for Weld County Garage.
