Guy Riordan Speaks: Minors Receiving a Hunting License

Guy Riordan

Outdoorsman Guy Riordan says that in the state of New Mexico, any person under the age of eighteen has to take and pass a hunter safety education course. Guy Riordan, a self-proclaimed “lover of all things outdoors” has appeared on nationally syndicated television programs. Additionally, Guy Riordan has worked in the public sector, dealing with regulations and programs for hunter safety. “I am a strong believer in the need for clear hunter safety education,” states Guy Riordan. According to Guy Riordan, individuals need to understand hunting safety, especially those considered legal minors.

“New Mexico will honor a safety education course issued by another locality in another state,” explains Guy Riordan. However, a minor who never received a license to hunt must obtain one, states Guy Riordan. In New Mexico, says Guy Riordan, this process involves studying, taking a test online and receiving a certificate. “This certificate is not a hunting license, the certificate is your proof that you have passed your hunter safety and allows you to then obtain the needed hunting license,” explains Guy Riordan.

While the process of acquiring a hunting license is different from state to state, Guy Riordan says the education piece is probably similar. “Most classes on hunting are to protect the hunter in the class, at the same time protecting all other hunters in the woods,” comments Guy Riordan. Typical classes in hunting safety will include basic concepts of “always consider the weapon loaded,” states Guy Riordan. “As well, most hunting safety stresses the concept of never pointing a weapon at anything without the intention of shooting that thing,” explains Guy Riordan.

“Again, the process for minors receiving a hunting license is different from state to state,” states Guy Riordan. In New Mexico, after completion of the class, which is several hours long, a minor can then take the needed test. “In New Mexico there are testing centers across the state that allows a minor to test their knowledge and then receive a hunting license,” states Guy Riordan. Such classes are also available for muzzleloader and bow as well, adds Guy Riordan.

Some states, including New Mexico, offer portions of hunting safety training for minors online. “An individual can take certain written portions of the class online as an alternative and then attend an eight hour hands-on session,” notes Guy Riordan. No matter how a minor chooses to become educated, Guy Riordan believes hunter safety should be of utmost concern for a parent of young hunter. “I can only speak for my home state of New Mexico. Here, we believe in hunter safety because it is crucial to create a safe and fun hunting experience,” concludes Guy Riordan.
