Tips from Dr. Ryan Ahlger: The Best Way to Battle Seasonal Allergies

Tips from Dr. Ryan Ahlger: The Best Way to Battle Seasonal Allergies

Whether your symptoms flare up in the spring, summer, winter, or fall, seasonal allergies can be a nuisance, keeping you inside when you want to be out. Thanks to advanced treatments, however, allergy sufferers can now go through life with a drastic reduction in symptoms. Here are a few ways seasonal allergies can be treated to return you to a sniffle-free lifestyle.

Understanding Allergies

Dr. Ahlger says that a body’s response to an allergen is actually a function of the immune system. Your body sees the irritant as a foreign substance and begins attacking it. It does this by releasing antibodies called immunoglobins which coat and irritate cells that contain chemicals. One of these chemicals, histamines, causes symptoms like sniffling, sneezing, and itchiness.

Common remedies

Depending on severity of symptoms, Dr. Ahlger may recommend one of the following remedies (in escalating order):

  • Antihistamines—Antihistamines reduce symptoms by suppressing the histamine reaction in the body. These can come in nasal, pill, or eye drop form, with pills being the most common. For short-term relief of symptoms, medications like Benadryl may be recommended, but for those suffering on a daily basis, prescription or over-the-counter pills that can be taken daily (Claritin, for example) are often advised.
  • Decongestants—To relieve symptoms, your provider may prescribe a decongestant to reduce congestion. Decongestants shrink nasal tissues and blood vessels, helping break up congestion and drying up the nasal passages. These are often recommended as a short-term solution.
  • Corticosteroids—While steroids can have side effects, they’re very effective in reducing inflammation. To be effective, however, they must be taken consistently, even when the sufferer has no symptoms.
  • Allergy shots—Also called immunotherapy, this is most effective treatment for those who suffer year-round allergies. It is often recommended for patients who have symptoms more than three months out of the year. Your physician will determine your particular allergens and create a dosage that includes those allergens to acclimate your body to them.

While seasonal allergies can get in the way of leading a fully productive life, patients now have many options to easily find relief.

Dr. William Knudson Explains the Causes of Flat Feet

Dr. William Knudson

Dr. William Knudson

Dr. William Knudson often sees patients with fallen arches in his Leesburg, Virginia podiatric practice. In some cases, the damage is a result of poor footwear or long-term damage to the foot. But as Dr. William Knudson tells these patients, in some cases the cause of flat feet is genetic. Whatever the cause, Dr. William Knudson advises that patients take measures to correct improper arch support. Failure to do so, Dr. William Knudson says, can result in ongoing health problems. Today, Dr. William Knudson speaks with Interviewing Experts about flat feet—the causes and the best methods of treatment.

Interviewing Experts: All my life, I’ve heard people called “flat-footed.” What exactly does that mean?

Dr. William Knudson: In a normal human foot, the middle of the foot is arched, which helps evenly distribute the weight throughout the foot. A flat-footed individual lacks this arch.

Interviewing Experts: What causes flat-footedness?

Dr. William Knudson: Babies are often born flat-footed but arches form as they grow older. In some children, though, the arch never quite forms, leaving the person flat-footed for life. Then there are those who once had arches, but they’ve since fallen.

Interviewing Experts: What causes someone’s arches to fall?

Dr. William Knudson: The arch of the foot is actually a network of bones, muscles, and joints that help balance the weight of the body. Over time those muscle and joints can weaken and eventually collapse, causing the person to suffer from “fallen arches.” It can be caused by excessive standing on hard surfaces over many years, weight problems, or by wearing improper shoes.

Interviewing Experts: How can I determine if I’m flat-footed?

Dr. William Knudson: The best way to tell is to step on concrete with a wet foot. The footprint should be thin in the center. If there is no thinning out, you may be flat-footed.

Interviewing Experts: Is flat-footedness painful?

Dr. William Knudson: Not by itself, but the resulting strain can cause pain and even inflammation.

Interviewing Experts: Does this only impact the foot?

Dr. William Knudson: Some patients also report ankle, leg, and lower back pain as a result of flat-footedness or fallen arches.

Interviewing Experts: What kind of treatment is available for flat-footedness?

Dr. William Knudson: I often will recommend over-the-counter arch supports, which can be inserted into the patient’s shoe for relief. Elevating the feet and using ice to reduce inflammation can also help.

For patients in the Leesburg, Virginia area, Dr. William Knudson can help provide relief from flat feet at his practice. With thousands of patients relying on his advice, Dr. William Knudson believes in not only helping patients treat foot problems but also advising patients on proper foot care to promote lifelong foot health.

Thaddeus Heffner – Keeping Our Stories Real

Licensed Marriage and Family therapist Thaddeus Heffner believes each of us sees the world through our own perspective. Because of this, says Thaddeus Heffner, many individuals never progress beyond seeing the world through his or her own tiny window. However, there are many perspectives with which to view life. In this brief conversation, Thaddeus Heffner speaks about the importance of keeping our stories authentic.

Interviewing Experts: When you refer to someone’s ‘story,’ what do you mean?

Thaddeus Heffner: When we see or experience something, we assign a story to it. It’s the way we perceive the things we see.

Interviewing Experts: Is this story always accurate?

Thaddeus Heffner: Not at all. Sometimes the story is accurate, but often we take the sensory input we’ve experienced and translate it in a way that is a huge leap in comparison to what is actually happening, or what happened.

Interviewing Experts: That sounds a lot like paranoia.

Thaddeus Heffner: You could say that. An example I use is when someone sees a group of people who all look at him or her and start laughing. The reality is, they may be laughing at something completely unrelated, but the person is sure they’re all laughing at him.

Interviewing Experts: Of course then, you don’t react well to that group of people because of perception, right?

Thaddeus Heffner: Exactly. I assume they’re talking about me and shut down, so I never take the chance to get to know them. Because of that, I end up isolated and miss out on a great opportunity to meet someone new.

Interviewing Experts: What can a person do to break that cycle?

Thaddeus Heffner: First and foremost is to reframe the way you think. I work with clients all the time to accomplish that.

Interviewing Experts: What does that process look like?

Thaddeus Heffner: Well, in the case I cited above, instead of assuming the other person is laughing at them, I tell my clients to see that group of people as a group who knows how to have fun and has a great sense of humor.

Interviewing Experts: So, for instance you might suggest that he or she introduce themselves to the group of laughing people at the party?

Thaddeus Heffner: Sure. Why not?

Interviewing Experts: Are you saying that part of thinking differently is to begin to see things differently?

Thaddeus Heffner: Right! Not just seeing the situation differently, but also processing it using the logical part of the brain to come up with a more factual interpretation of events.

Interviewing Experts: Do you believe we create these false stories out of fear of rejection?

Thaddeus Heffner: I do. A lot of times it’s easier to make those kinds of assumptions than to get to know people and risk being rejected.

Interview with Steven P. Delarge | Tour de Cure for Diabetes

Steven P. Delarge

Steven P. Delarge

Steven P. Delarge, business executive, believes in giving back to the community. Each year, he participates in the Tour de Cure for Diabetes that, according to Delarge, is a bicycling event that benefits the effort to find a cure for diabetes. Today, Steven P. Delarge talks to Interviewing Experts about the event.

Interviewing Experts: How did you first learn about Tour de Cure?

Steven P. Delarge: I was actually looking for a great project to help engage my employees in charitable work in the community. We were searching for something that would incorporate fitness with helping the community.

Interviewing Experts: So that led you to Tour de Cure?

Steven P. Delarge: Yes, and after learning about this great bike ride to benefit diabetes in Saratoga Springs, I knew I’d found the perfect event. Bicycling is both great exercise and accessible to everyone. My employees wouldn’t have to be triathletes to participate.

Interviewing Experts: How far do the cyclists ride in the Tour de Cure?

Steven P. Delarge: The great thing about the Tour de Cure is that participants can choose the distance. Newbies can try out a five-mile fun ride, while more experienced cyclists can go for the 100-mile ride through the countryside.

Interviewing Experts: Was the event an immediate success with your employees?

Steven P. Delarge: Well, not exactly. In fact, the first year I was the only participant. The only other person who signed up backed out because it was storming the day of the race.

Interviewing Experts: But you rode anyway?

Steven P. Delarge: Yes–for five miles in the pouring rain.

Interviewing Experts: That’s dedication. Did others ride in the rain that year, too?

Steven P. Delarge: Yes, and it was so inspiring to see so many people pushing through despite the bad weather.

Interviewing Experts: Not just the cyclists, but the workers, too?

Steven P. Delarge: The volunteers manning the signup tables worked in the rain, and even diabetes sufferers were out there, riding alongside us in their red jerseys.

Interviewing Experts: Your company began taking a bigger role in the event after that. How did that come about?

Steven P. Delarge: As I stood there, cheering on the others finishing the race, I found the enthusiasm contagious.

Interviewing Experts: You made a big jump the next year, right?

Steven P. Delarge: The next year we had one of the largest teams, raising more than $15,000 for the American Diabetes Association.

Interviewing Experts: What would you say to other businesses interested in engaging employees in this type of activity?

Steven P. Delarge: I can’t express how proud I am of my former employees for their enthusiastic participation in this event. I highly recommend it. Not only is it a great way to support a good cause and become a part of the community, it’s also fun.

Steven P. Delarge has served as CEO and CFO for some of the most innovative chemical, energy, and aerospace businesses in the country. Currently, Steven P. Delarge serves as president of Silicones and Quartz for Momentive Performance Materials, where he leads operations and finance for more than 5,000 employees worldwide.

Byron Pederson Discusses the Global Impact of Drilling for Water in the Desert

Byron Pederson

Byron Pederson

Byron Pederson knows that in some areas of the world water isn’t as plentiful a commodity as it is in the United States. That’s why the co-founder of Instant Tax Solutions wants to spread the word about how far a few dollars can go in a poverty-stricken country that needs water. Recently, Byron Pederson met with the staff of Interviewing Experts to discuss the work some missionaries are doing to help bring water to those who need it most.

Interviewing Experts: “Byron Pederson, what are some of the questions you get most often about drilling for water?”

Byron Pederson: “Many people wonder if there’s a way to find water in the desert. One of the best ways is to single out areas with a lot of vegetation. By drilling within the area of a tree’s underground branches, you may find water.”

Interviewing Experts: “Once you’ve found a well, how much water can you expect to find?”

Byron Pederson: “It all depends on the well, but usually you’ll find that the wider the well, the more plentiful it is.”

Interviewing Experts: “Byron Pederson, explain to us how safe this well water is for drinking.”

Byron Pederson: “Because much of this water is underground, where livestock and sewage can’t contaminate it, it’s usually very safe.”

Interviewing Experts: “Byron Pederson, what about saltwater? Is it safe to drink?”

Byron Pederson: “No. The salt content actually can cause dehydration. It’s a must to find freshwater.”

Interviewing Experts:  Some spiritualists believe in dousing. Byron Pederson, is dousing a good way to find water in the desert?

Byron Pederson: “Because of the religious beliefs in the affected areas, dousing can be very off-putting to locals. It’s best to find water through more earthly methods.”

Interviewing Experts: “How much do people need to donate to make a difference?”

Byron Pederson: “Just seventy-five American dollars can actually provide water to an entire village. Any amount people can give can make a difference.”

Interviewing Experts:Byron Pederson, are there other ways people can help?”

Byron Pederson: “What are most needed in these other countries are people to do the work. By pitching in and helping, people really can change the world!”

Theodore Stroukoff: My Favorite Things to Do in New Mexico

Theodore Stroukoff

Theodore Stroukoff

Theodore Stroukoff has spent many years in New Mexico, and the beauty that surrounds him is something that he never takes for granted. As a traveling nurse, Theodore Stroukoff has worked in many different environments, but he always looks forward to coming home to New Mexico. While Theodore Stroukoff is originally from New Jersey, he has fallen in love with the beauty of New Mexico, and is proud to call the state home.

New Mexico is known for its scenic views and dense population, Theodore Stroukoff points out. As the sixth least densely populated state in the U.S., Theodore Stroukoff says New Mexico varies from vast deserts to mountains that rise as high as the eye can see. He notes that New Mexico residents find plenty to enjoy without ever leaving their beautiful home state. A few of New Mexico’s most notable destinations, according to Theodore Stroukoff, include the following.

International UFO Museum—Roswell

Everyone’s heard of the famous Roswell incident, where a UFO was rumored to crash in the New Mexican desert in 1947. According to Theodore Stroukoff, the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell offers tour groups and a gift shop, exploring the history of UFO sightings in Roswell and other areas.

Billy the Kid Museum—Fort Sumner

Billy the Kid was one of the most notorious outlaws of the 19th century, dying in Fort Sumner, New Mexico in 1881, says Theodore Stroukoff. As Theodore Stroukoff  describes, the Museum provides artifacts from the Wild West and Billy the Kid’s rifle, chaps and spurs, and the actual “Wanted” poster. Theodore Stroukoff says that the Billy the Kid museum even has locks of Billy the Kid’s hair.

El Santuario de Chimayo Shrine—Chimayo

This legendary Catholic shrine is said to be the location of a crucifix, discovered in the early 1800s by a friar, Theodore Stroukoff relates. As the story goes, the friar found the crucifix when he saw a light from a nearby hillside and began digging. Once discovered, Theodore Stroukoff says, a priest took the crucifix to Santa Fe, but it kept disappearing and reappearing in Chimayo. Finally, Theodore Stroukoff says, it was decided to leave it in the land where it was discovered. The small chapel built to honor the miraculous crucifix is the site of the El Santuario de Chimayo shrine, according to Theodore Stroukoff, which is a popular destination in New Mexico today.

Theodore Stroukoff notes that these are only a few of the many amazing attractions New Mexico has.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Theodore Stroukoff relocated to New Mexico as an adult. A traveling nurse, Theodore Stroukoff has worked in a variety of settings, taking on a multitude of challenges that have helped him grow as a nursing professional. Theodore Stroukoff is proud to call New Mexico home.

DTI:  Diversified Trading Institute’s Trader’s Edge educates not only active investors and traders, but also people who have been interested in the market but never knew how to get started.

DR Marketing Group: It’s perfect for traders of all levels.

DTI:  Trader’s Edge provides a powerful educational experience that market enthusiasts will benefit from and be able to use immediately.  Trader’s Edge is based on the reality of the market and over 50 years of combines experience.

DR Marketing Group: Whether you are a beginner or an advanced trader, Trader’s Edge provides guidance and instructional expertise needed to become a better trader from the short and long term.

DTI:  I’m going to tell you how you can get your edge on the stock market in an understandable way with DTI’s Trader’s Edge, 7 strategies for profitable trading. Whether on a website or online, DTI gives a comprehensive education in training not just in the U.S. markets, but in global markets as well.

DR Marketing Group: Their success is based on their experience and their methodology and the numbers prove it. Diversified Trading Institute has successfully trained thousands of traders and investors around the globe. Joining me is DTI founder and creator of Trader’s Edge – 7 Strategies for Profitable Trading, Tom Busby. How did you get started?

DTI:  Well, when I first got started I didn’t know the difference between a commodity or a stock.  Just like so many people, what I said “Hey, let me learn”, and so by educating myself I got better.  It used to take real tragic news for a stock to plummet, but now if they miss by a quarter in a quarter then stocks can get trampled, so we’re really trading on volatility, which is what is in Trader’s Edge is the way to go.

DR Marketing Group: You’re hitting a key point – news will drive the market, it will drive the big market, it will drive the small market.  So if you understand news, and we do that in Trader’s Edge, if you understand what to do when news events occur, then you’ll understand how to make money when those events occur, so what you have got to do is you just got to continue to educate yourself.

DTI:  There are lots of key ingredients that go into this, and I’ve seen it inside your books and I’ve seen it on TV, time of day, key numbers and road map indicators.

DR Marketing Group: Let’s talk about time of day because I couldn’t imagine that the average person would know the time of day could mean so much in trading on the stock markets.

DTI:  Just think about one thing that’s a common characteristic of all of us – we like to eat.  Well, we call it lunch time in America, when does it start?  Eleven o’clock central time. When does it end? One o’clock central time, so if you know that, you know the market volume is going to die down, that’s a natural thing, you know not to pay too much attention to what’s going on because a real trend is not going to resurface until we get to one o’clock central time, and then you go on what I call the California market.

DR Marketing Group: And then you’ve got people all over the country who are doing that for breakfast lunch and dinner?

DTI:  We developed a chat room and this chat room is open 24 hours a day, we got people from all over the world participating in this.

DR Marketing Group: I think that is what is so unique about this is how people get to interact with one of America’s best traders literally at their fingertips.

DTI:  I might not have all the answers, but I’ll tell you this – we’re going to give our best effort and what we’re going to do is try to stay there with the student and take them through those different levels where he can achieve his goals.

DR Marketing Group: And your website, I’ve got to give you admiration for this, it shows every trade, every day just about real time.

DTI:  You know, people are always concerned “how much money are you making”, I say don’t be concerned about how much money your making, be concerned about the risks that you’re going to take in the trade. If you worry about the risk, the rewards will take care of themselves.

DR Marketing Group: That is great stuff. Tell us more about Trader’s Edge.

DTI:  What we try to do at DTI, we take you and we’ll teach you these steps, you’ve got to understand the code of the market.  You can’t have any chance of success unless you understand that code, and through the Trader’s Edge here, we’re going to go through that step by step to give you that overview that allows you to succeed.

DR Marketing Group: This collection is simple and easy to follow, anyone can benefit from it regardless of their current knowledge of the stock market, and when it is followed it can truly work.

Naperville Dentists and Dr. Chiann Gibson Discuss Use of Prophylaxis Prior to Dental Appointments

Naperville Dentists

Naperville Dentists

There are many skilled Naperville dentists, but perhaps none are as popular as Dr. Chiann Gibson. Interviewing Experts recently had a chance to sit down at the office of Smiles by Dr. Gibson and Associates, with Dr. Gibson and a handful of her colleagues, for a quick chat about new ADA guidelines for the use of antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Here, the Naperville dentists shed some light on the subject.

Interviewing Experts: Good morning, doctors. Thank you for your time this morning.

Naperville Dentists: Always glad to get involved. Oral health is so important.

Interviewing Experts: Can you please tell us what the antibiotic prophylaxis is used for, specific to dental treatments?

Naperville Dentists: Prophylaxis is used to prevent bacterial infections caused by invasive surgical or dental procedures.

Interviewing Experts: Does this mean that anyone who has recently had surgery should tell his or her dentist?

Naperville Dentists: Yes, especially if they’ve undergone any sort of joint replacement or prosthesis.

Interviewing Experts: What kind of infection does the prophylaxis prevent?

Naperville Dentists: It is often used to prevent endocarditis, which can damage the valves of the heart. Patients with abnormal heart valves or already-damaged heart tissue are most at risk.

Interviewing Experts: Are there any signs or symptoms of endocarditis?

Naperville Dentists: Well, we first need to point out that, if a patient is concerned about any symptoms, they should immediately consult their physician. However, as dentists, there are certain symptoms that we are familiar with that can point to endocarditis.

Interviewing Experts: And those would be?

Naperville Dentists: Sudden weakness and fatigue, weight loss, chills, joint pain, an overall feeling of discomfort or recurrent fevers are all associated with endocarditis.

Interviewing Experts: Are there any other symptoms to watch out for?

Naperville Dentists: These are some of the symptoms we are familiar with, but they could also point to a number of other medical conditions that only a qualified medical doctor can diagnose.

Interviewing Experts: Can you tell us if there are any specific groups of people who are no longer prescribed this medication prior to dental procedures?

Naperville Dentists: There are those that have taken them in the past, including rheumatic heart disease patients, those with congenital heart conditions, and mitral valve prolapse patients. These people, among others, are not generally prescribed the antibiotic anymore.

Interviewing Experts: Are there specific dental procedures that are of concern?

Naperville Dentists: Each patient will be evaluated on a case-to-case basis, and whether or not take antibiotics will be determined by their previous medical history.

Interviewing Experts: Should patients with certain conditions avoid going to the dentist altogether?

Naperville Dentists: Absolutely not. Oral health and hygiene is important to your overall physical condition. Patients who are concerned for any reason should open up a conversation with their dentist and include their medical doctor, if possible.

Interviewing Experts: Well, doctors, we appreciate your time today will let you get back to work. But first, Dr. Gibson, thank you for letting us use your office today. Would you please tell our readers a bit about your practice?

Dr. Chiann Gibson: Sure! Smiles by Dr. Gibson is a full-service, family oriented dental office in The Main St. Promenade building in downtown Naperville. We offer everything from general cleanings and exams to Hollywood Smile Makeovers that includes exclusive use of our stretch limousine. I think I speak for all of the Naperville dentists here in saying thank you for spotlighting our profession.

Incredible Discoveries on Lifetime with Hyp-Yoga, Inc.

Incredible Discoveries

Incredible Discoveries

The following segment aired on Incredible Discoveries on Lifetime Television. Joining Incredible Discoveries was Hyp-Yoga, Inc. to discuss Hyp-Yoga 6 Week Series

Incredible Discoveries on Lifetime Television Guests:  Carly Heline Cummings, Becky Grabner, Kim Isherwood

Incredible Discoveries on Lifetime Television: Have you tried everything to lose weight and get fit? Have you spent hundreds of dollars on gym memberships, hard to do home work-out programs and packaged food services, only to find that you look and feel the same as when you started? What if Incredible Discoveries told you that you have everything already inside of you to stay young healthy and fit for life? This is Hyp-Yoga. The next step in the evolution of fitness.

Hyp-Yoga is more than just a home workout program. That’s because you not only learn to train your body, but your mind as well. Incredible Discoveries shows you how with Hyp-Yoga your mind will learn how to achieve the calm relaxed state needed to help your body shed unwanted pounds and inches. In just minutes a day, Incredible Discoveries guarantees you will begin to make the positive changes needed for optimum health and fitness.

From all appearances, it looks as if people are simply performing traditional yoga, a great way to strengthen and stretch your body. But, in truth they are doing much more than that. These people are performing an exercise routine called Hyp-Yoga. Hyp-Yoga is the next step in fitness evolution, combining a unique mind to body regimen that works you on the inside as well as the outside. Helping you to lose pounds and inches, tightening and strengthening your muscles and perhaps most importantly helping you to de-stress, which will help you to start burning fat as energy for your daily activities. Putting you on the right path for total mind to body health.

Now, here to help Incredible Discoveries understand what Hyp-Yoga is, we welcome the founder of Hyp-Yoga herself, Carly Heline Cummings, along with her co-founders, Becky Grabner and Kim Isherwood.

Incredible Discoveries: Now, Carly, why “Hyp-Yoga”?

Carly: Well, Hyp-Yoga is a true blend of mind to body fitness. No matter what form of diet or exercise you choose to do in order to lose weight and get in shape, if you want to succeed, you need to be in the right frame of mind, that is, you need to enjoy what you’re doing and focus on the goals you would like to meet. Hyp Yoga combines what I feel are the two most powerful fitness tools we can use for success, Yoga and Hypnosis.

Incredible Discoveries: How does Hyp Yoga actually work?

Carly: Hyp-Yoga works because we teach you how to focus your mind on what your body actually wants.

Incredible Discoveries: The people we have here today, they are not simply going through the motions of yoga; they are making positive changes in their minds.

Becky: For instance, this position they are in called “tree pose”. Someone performing regular yoga, can get into this position, it is not hard at all, and if they stand like this long enough, they will begin to feel it.

Incredible Discoveries: I’ve done that pose.  Most of the time, all I can think of is when will they let me put my arms down.

Carly: Exactly. But with Hyp-Yoga, we add visualization to this pose.  We have you tune your mind into the positive changes you’re presently making in this pose.  We teach you how to visualize your ideal body.  And because your mind is so powerful, your body will start to respond by gaining strength and burning calories.

Incredible Discoveries: Hyp-Yoga sounds so simple, but is anything really that easy?

Becky: Hyp-Yoga is simple, that’s an important thing to remember. Hyp-Yoga is the perfect form of exercise regardless of what shape you’re in, how old you are or even your fitness level. Carly, Kim, and I are all real women with real bodies.  Carly is in her 20’s, Kim is in her 40’s, and I am in my 50’s.  Even I can do it!

Kim: That’s the key, because every thought or idea in your mind has a corresponding physical reaction in your body.  In other words, you are and will become what you think.

For instance, if you constantly tell yourself you are overweight or fat, you will either stay overweight or you will become overweight if you are not already. Your body will organically morph into what you think of yourself. It would be wise, knowing this, to only think positive, powerful thoughts that can bring you closer to your ideal self.

Incredible Discoveries: The Hyp-Yoga 6 Week Weight Loss System centers around Hyp-Yoga’s revolutionary work out DVDs. Workout One on The first DVD in the Hyp-Yoga 6 Week Weight Loss System is called “Mind Body and Spirit” and introduces you to the basics of what Hyp-Yoga is all about. This easy to follow introductory workout is designed for everyone, regardless of your fitness level or whether or not you’ve ever practiced yoga before.

Carly: By using the Hyp-Yoga Program, your body will start feeling younger, leaner and more energized as you learn to let it rest and repair itself. You will keep create new healthy behaviors that will stick because you will be subconsciously motivated by the beneficial suggestions and encouragements you will receive when you perform Hyp-Yoga.

More importantly, your mind will learn how to bring itself to a relaxed, calm state where your body will have the chance to make the positive changes it desperately needs to keep you healthy and energized.

Interviewing-Experts Blog Talks With Alan Shortall, Founder and CEO of Unilife

Alan Shortall is the Founder, CEO and Executive Director of U.S. based corporation Unilife. The company is a developer and maker of advanced drug delivery systems and was founded by Alan Shortall in 2002. The following is an excerpt from a recent interview with the Interviewing Experts blog staff.

Interviewing-Experts: The Founder, CEO and Executive Director of Unilife, Alan Shortall continues to be the driving influential force pushing the rapid expansion globally of Unilife. Established in 2002, Unilife is a developer and maker of advanced drug delivery systems based in the United States. Welcome, Alan Shortall.

Alan Shortall: Thank you.

Interviewing-Experts: How has Unilife been able to attain their position of leadership in the pharmaceutical industry?

Alan Shortall: To start, we had to transition Unilife from being an Australian based company to a U.S. based company, and list on the NASDAQ. We made this move because, for one, the U.S. is the world’s largest and most mature market for safety syringes. Also, the U.S. has levels of industry expertise in medical device manufacturing and quality standards that few else can match. For Unilife to be a global industry leader, and to consolidate our relationships with multiple pharmaceutical companies across the U.S., Europe and Asia, we had to step up to a new level and become a U.S. based business.

Interviewing-Experts: Can you explain how Unilife was able to take full advantage of this new opportunity, Alan Shortall?

Alan Shortall: We built the industrial capabilities required to meet projected demand for our portfolio of products. This included the development of a new state-of-the-art facility, and the development of fully automated assembly systems to manufacture our products. We also had to enhance our quality control and business systems to meet stringent pharmaceutical standards for drug delivery devices. Until we had completed all these steps, we could not begin to finalize preparations to commence commercial production and supply.

We also needed to further enhance the strength of our world-class team to ensure we had the internal expertise and depth to deliver on our milestones. We knew pharmaceutical companies would only begin to sit up and take serious notice of Unilife once we had demonstrated we had the level of internal expertise necessary to safely carry their baby…the injectable drug itself.

To complement our internal expertise, we had to expand and strengthen our relationships with other pharmaceutical industry leaders. This included not just the pharmaceutical companies themselves, but also the established and qualified suppliers of materials and services that they work with every day.

Interviewing-Experts: I think many people would be very surprised to know just how much Unilife achieved behind the scenes in 2010 and 2011.

Alan Shortall: Yes. The successful redomiciliation of Unilife Corporation to the U.S., and the subsequent listing of its common stock on the NASDAQ Global Market was a catalyst for Unilife’s rapid business expansion. The redomiciliation and NASDAQ listing was an enormous task. It absorbed many, many hours of management time. Trust me when I say it’s something you would only ever want to do once.

Interviewing-Experts: What was required to accomplish the redomiciliation?

Alan Shortall: In Australia, we had to develop an Information Memorandum (IM). The development and sign-off of this 400-page document was an extremely onerous process. A Due Diligence committee comprising a number of senior executives, our auditors and legal representatives in the U.S. and Australia were responsible for ensuring that all statements and claims within the document were entirely accurate. This included a review of all contracts, business agreements and employment agreements entered into by the Company. Furthermore, everyone had to sign off on all of statements contained within the IM. Prior to its printing, it then had to be reviewed and signed off by ASIC, the ASX and the Australian Federal Court. It was then posted to more than 7,000 shareholders around the world, prior to their voting on the proposed scheme of arrangement to redomicile the Company to the U.S.

In parallel with this process for the IM, the Company was required to generate a Form 10 with the SEC in the U.S., prior to it being declared effective for listing on the NASDAQ. This Form 10 document was also extremely extensive requiring full legal verification of all matters pertaining to the business of the company, including business info, employment agreements, contracts and agreements and financial data.  Whilst similar in content to the IM, the Form 10 required an entirely different structure to meet the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s disclosure requirements.

Only after the completion of all of these activities across Australia and the U.S. were we able to redomicile the Company and then list on NASDAQ.

Interviewing-Experts: What benefits has the Company realized from its redomiciliation?

Alan Shortall: Among several benefits, the cost and effort it took has been validated by our inclusion in more than 20 U.S. indices including the Russell 2000 Microcap and Global Indices. We continue to build up the number of institutions and large U.S. based investment groups that are on our register.

Interviewing-Experts: Alan Shortall, can you tell us about the quality of leadership that Unilife has been able to attract?

Alan Shortall: We have built a world-class management team with very strong backgrounds in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. On average, each member of our management team has 25 years of experience in industry sectors that strongly complement our areas of business activity.

Interviewing-Experts: And the Unilife Board members?

Alan Shortall: We have been able to do an excellent job in expanding our Board. In this day and age, the job of being a Non-Executive Director in a publicly listed company in the U.S. can be highly onerous. It carries a lot of responsibility. And therefore it’s difficult to find respected business leaders who are willing to join the board of a public company.

We now have seven board members in total with the clear majority being non-executive and independent. These board appointments reflect our commitment to a high level of corporate governance.  Shareholders can be sure that we have the stewardship necessary to help guide the Company in upcoming discussions with pharmaceutical companies.

Interviewing-Experts: Last year Unilife completed the construction of a new global headquarters and manufacturing facility in York, Pennsylvania…

Alan Shortall: Yes, it is hard to believe that the site only a year to complete. Especially when you consider that we broke ground shortly before one of the harshest winters in Pennsylvania history!

Standing at the site now is a 165,000 square feet state-of-the art facility. To put this into perspective, the building is as large as three football fields… This building has been designed by some of the best pharmaceutical architects in the U.S. It will be fully complaint with the most stringent pharmaceutical standards for primary drug containers. Indeed, across many areas, we believe this facility will help us set a new industry benchmark for the production of prefilled syringes.

This $31 million project was completed on-schedule. And, taking into account the cost of additional resources we have elected to install in the facility since construction began that will make our business even stronger, we have remained largely on budget.

Interviewing-Experts: How did Unilife finance the project?

Alan Shortall: To ensure facility construction timelines continued to align with the accelerated industrialization program for the Unifill prefilled syringe, we invested approximately $10 million of our own cash reserves into the project. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agreed to guarantee $10 million of an $18 million mortgage Unilife obtained from Metro Bank of Harrisburg to support construction of the facility. This guarantee by the USDA provided us with lower mortgage rates, saving us valuable capital resources at this stage of our development.

We also qualified for $5.4 million in grants and loans from Pennsylvania, the majority of which relate to the development of the facility.  This financial support from the government has strongly improved our balance sheet, and offers us access to capital under very favorable terms.

As a result of our efforts, we were able to move into a facility that will have the capacity to manufacture up to 400 million of the most advanced syringes in the world. And that is just phase one of our construction plans. A second stage of the facility is already pre-approved. This would add another 100,000 square foot of production space, and take our total production capacity to around one billion units per year subject to commercial demand.

Interviewing-Experts: Alan Shortall, thank you for taking the time to talk with us today.

Alan Shortall: You are welcome.
