Interviewing Experts Staff Post: How to Manage Facebook Privacy Settings

Over the holidays Facebook changed their privacy settings, and in an unfortunate habit – they did it without allowing users to “opt in.” That means that whether Facebook members want the new privacy controls or not, they were automatically changed. And although they are a tiny bit easier to navigate, it still takes some work to reset everything. So, the staff of Interviewing Experts wants to help Facebook users to control what the world sees in their time line.

A Facebook time line is where member activity shows up. For instance any new status update, photos, photos that members have been tagged in, posts that members have been tagged in or Spotify listens show up there. Those settings can be accessed from the Facebook privacy setting page, allowing members to keep unwanted updates from showing up on their time line.

One of the questions that users often have is, “Who can see what I post?” The way to determine that is by clicking on “Public,” “Friends” or a custom network. However, in our opinion, that setting really isn’t as powerful as it should be. The best way to manage privacy settings is to click on the one next to the comment box for each item. But beware if the “Public” option is clicked on for a status update, it will default to that in the future. If something is of a personal nature, make sure to manually click it to “Friends.”

If a Facebook member has any older posts that were set to “Friends of Friends” or “Public” those can be changed from the status update box as well to “Friends” for higher privacy.

If a user wants to see what they have been tagged in, he or she should go to the Activity Log. There they can see what’s been updated to their profile and/or what they’ve been tagged in. From there, users can decide what they want on the time line and also who can see his or her individual updates.

Finally, Facebook will occasionally use members’ information as advertisements to their friends. For instance, if someone has “liked” a business or product, friends can see the user’s name under the advertisement. To change that, edit the “Third Party Sites” as well as “Ads and Friends” settings to “no one.”

Facebook is a great tool for keeping touch with friends and family, but it’s important to maintain as much privacy control over the account as a person wants.

Interviewing Experts – Tips For Safer Online Shopping

This holiday season there was a 193% percent jump in people shopping with their mobile devices on Black Friday. But as useful as it is to be able to shop anywhere without having to stand in line at a retailer, there are simple precautions that consumers should take to make sure that they’re not divulging personal information to a third party. With that in mind, Interviewing Experts has some tips for consumers who are finishing up their holiday shopping.

Not all sites and web pages are equally secure. Remember to make sure that the checkout page reads “HTTPS” in the browser bar. The “S” at the end differentiates secure sites from non-secure sites. Never enter personal or financial information on a site that simply reads “HTTP.”

The next thing that shoppers should notice is the lock icon in the address bar. That lock indicates that the site is secured with an SSL (secure sockets layer) connection. It’s easier to see on a laptop than a cell phone, so it’s important to zoom in to the address bar to make sure the lock symbol is there. If it’s not, don’t shop there.

Another simple tip to remember is to use a password on your mobile device in case it’s  stolen. Studies have shown that only about half of mobile device users have a security password. Many smart phones contain personal banking information and credit card numbers. Even if certain apps have passwords, it’s easy enough to reset once a thief has their hands on your device. A password is a simple step to help ensure that your personal information stays personal.

Also, it’s always a good idea to shop online with a credit card instead of a debit card. Most credit cards have purchase protection in case the number is stolen or if there is an issue with the purchase. Although It’s difficult to keep up with everything during the holiday season, Interviewing Experts wants to remind consumers that it’s very important to double check bank and credit card statements to ensure that there hasn’t been any fraudulent activity on those accounts.

Tips from Dr. Ryan Ahlger: The Best Way to Battle Seasonal Allergies

Tips from Dr. Ryan Ahlger: The Best Way to Battle Seasonal Allergies

Whether your symptoms flare up in the spring, summer, winter, or fall, seasonal allergies can be a nuisance, keeping you inside when you want to be out. Thanks to advanced treatments, however, allergy sufferers can now go through life with a drastic reduction in symptoms. Here are a few ways seasonal allergies can be treated to return you to a sniffle-free lifestyle.

Understanding Allergies

Dr. Ahlger says that a body’s response to an allergen is actually a function of the immune system. Your body sees the irritant as a foreign substance and begins attacking it. It does this by releasing antibodies called immunoglobins which coat and irritate cells that contain chemicals. One of these chemicals, histamines, causes symptoms like sniffling, sneezing, and itchiness.

Common remedies

Depending on severity of symptoms, Dr. Ahlger may recommend one of the following remedies (in escalating order):

  • Antihistamines—Antihistamines reduce symptoms by suppressing the histamine reaction in the body. These can come in nasal, pill, or eye drop form, with pills being the most common. For short-term relief of symptoms, medications like Benadryl may be recommended, but for those suffering on a daily basis, prescription or over-the-counter pills that can be taken daily (Claritin, for example) are often advised.
  • Decongestants—To relieve symptoms, your provider may prescribe a decongestant to reduce congestion. Decongestants shrink nasal tissues and blood vessels, helping break up congestion and drying up the nasal passages. These are often recommended as a short-term solution.
  • Corticosteroids—While steroids can have side effects, they’re very effective in reducing inflammation. To be effective, however, they must be taken consistently, even when the sufferer has no symptoms.
  • Allergy shots—Also called immunotherapy, this is most effective treatment for those who suffer year-round allergies. It is often recommended for patients who have symptoms more than three months out of the year. Your physician will determine your particular allergens and create a dosage that includes those allergens to acclimate your body to them.

While seasonal allergies can get in the way of leading a fully productive life, patients now have many options to easily find relief.

Interviewing Experts Discusses How To Plan a World Class Party Inexpensively

When planning a wedding reception, baby shower or corporate event, most people want to evoke a type of mystery that sets them a class-above, but which is difficult for anyone to exactly pinpoint. We all know the type of party – one that’s difficult to leave and makes every guest feel that the party was practically crafted with them – and only them – in mind. Today, Interviewing Experts has some tips for people who want to jazz up their party repertoire.

First of all, the perfect host or hostess will have a good quality cocktail shaker. The perfect shaken cocktail is exponentially better than anything that can come out of a blender. If possible, find one with a glass attachment. Very basic cocktail shakers can be found for around ten dollars and the higher end models can be up to fifty dollars. However, what ever a person’s price range – a cocktail shaker is a must.

Nice serving trays are important too. They can help set the tone of the party from black tie, to relaxed and rustic. Instead of scouring big name stores, this is the perfect place to let creativity lend a hand. When searching garage sales this summer look for old chests of drawers that are inexpensive. If they have shallow drawers, they can be easily converted into serving trays, either by papering them or painting them. Also, serving trays can be found at thrift shops and second hand stores.

And last but not least, don’t overlook the lighting. Harsh overhead lights have no place in a social situation, but guests also don’t want to have to rely on their sense of touch to find the appetizers, either. So there is a very large middle ground that can be filled in with lights and candles.

If spending extra money for new fixtures isn’t in the budget, opt for low wattage white spiral energy efficient bulbs. Or, even something unusual like “stained glass” bulbs. The different colors can make an elegant presentation in the right lamp.

Candles don’t just need to be tapered and on a table. They can be specialty candles, votive candles, or tea lights. Floating candles can be stunning on a food table, and because they have a low center of gravity, they’re not only lovely – they’re also practical.

Hopefully these tips will help hosts and hostesses give their next party a little boost and mystery that will make their guests never want to leave. Within reason of course!

Harry Potter Books Now Available in Digital Book Format

In news that’s nearly as exciting as playing Quidditch for the first time, Amazon.com recently announced that all seven of the Harry Potter series are available in the Kindle lending library.

The Interviewing Experts staff explains why this news is so welcome to fans of J.K. Rowling’s #1 bestseller series.

Last month the online retail mega store first obliquely hinted that the Harry Potter series might be hitting its virtual shelves, but with this announcement Potter fans can expect to find the series by the end of June. And those who have the Amazon Prime Membership can access the books as soon as they are available. The library now counts the adventures of the boy-wizard among its 145,000 books and not just in English – it’s in French, Italian, German and Spanish as well.

With its exclusive license from J.K. Rowling’s official Pottermore website, Amazon and Pottermore are the only two sites that legally offer the e-books. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed to the media.

The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library is a service that Amazon.com offers their Prime Membership customers for $79.99 and members can “check out” books as often as once a month.

Consumers who don’t have the Prime membership subscription can purchase Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban online for $7.99 each. Other books in the series are $9.99 each, and the whole series can be purchased as a collection for $57.54.

The Harry Potter series sold 450 million copies worldwide, and the books have been translated into 70 languages. For the nearly 20% of technology-savvy people that have some sort of an e-reader, having the tales of Harry and his friends available in this new format can only be good news.

Interviewing Experts Presents Humorous (But True) Airline Travel Tips

When traveling by air, whether it’s other people’s angry children or an over-served fellow passenger, it’s best to be prepared for any eventuality.

Q: What’s the best way to handle children who won’t stop kicking the seat?

A: Before flying make sure to cash a twenty-dollar bill for twenty singles because children are amenable to bribery. Start the bidding off at one dollar and work up as needed.

Q: What’s the best way to remember where my car is parked?

A: That’s an excellent question because it’s rare for a passenger to remember where he or she has parked after a long flight. (And the numbers fall exponentially if there are tired children or an international flight involved.) Try writing your parking information down at least twice and store it in your wallet and carry on.

Q: What’s the best way to deal with an inebriated seatmate who you don’t know?

A: There isn’t a polite way to tell someone that they’ve had enough to drink. However, an informational approach might be the best one. “Did you know that for every drink a person consumes, they should have two glasses of water?” The math alone should keep them silent for a few minutes.

Q: What if the airline food is bland?

A: Pack a small bottle of hot sauce. Hot sauce can cure all but the very worst airline food.

Q: What’s the best way to deal with lost luggage?

A: If traveling with a companion, cross pack clothing and other essentials so that if the airline does make a mistake, you can still have part of your wardrobe.  Traveling solo it’s a little more difficult to be proactive. But, keeping a change of clothing in your carry on will help to minimize the frustration in case something does go wrong.

Interviewing Experts hopes that these travel tips will help your trip go a bit smoother next time. Bon voyage!
