Margaret Suanne Bone

Margaret Suanne Bone

Margaret Suanne Bone is a Nashville-based supporter of the fight against Crohn’s Disease. As an avid runner, she has completed two half marathons in honor of her brother, who suffers from Crohn’s. The entire Bone family is active in the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Below, Margaret Suanne Bone explains why Crohn’s disease can take a physical and emotional toll on those individuals suffering from this disease.

Interviewing Experts:  What exactly is Crohn’s Disease?

Margaret Suanne Bone:  Crohn’s disease belongs to a condition known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD).  It’s a chronic inflammatory of the gastrointestinal tract.

Interviewing Experts: What are the symptoms of Crohn’s?

Margaret Suanne Bone:  Symptoms vary from person to person but the most common are diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps and pain, constipation, loss of appetite, and fatigue.

Interviewing Experts: You mentioned it’s a chronic disease. What does this mean for the patient?

Margaret Suanne Bone: Chronic means patients experience periods when the disease flares up and causes symptoms, followed by periods of remission when no symptoms are noticed at all.

Interviewing Experts: So this can be emotionally draining.

Margaret Suanne Bone: Yes, if symptoms are severe, one’s life may be consumed by a constant need to run to the restroom. Some people choose not to leave the house at all, which can lead to depression.

Interviewing Experts: Who is mostly affected by this disease?

Margaret Suanne Bone: Crohn’s disease affects more than 700,000 Americans. Crohn’s is more prevalent among young adults between the ages of 15 and 35.

Interviewing Experts: Tell us a little about the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.

Margaret Suanne Bone: CCFA is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers dedicated to finding the cures for Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis.

Interviewing Experts: Your family is active in this organization. How can people get involved with this non-profit?

Margaret Suanne Bone: CCFA has chapters in many cities, mainly in the Midwest and along the east coast. They always need volunteers, donors, advocates, sponsors, and members.

Margaret Suanne Bone also points out that a productive way to be active in CCFA is to participate in the “Take Steps, Be Heard for Crohn’s & Colitis” nationwide fundraising walks. For more information about CCFA and Crohn’s disease, visit ccfa.org.

YORHealth helped Maika Trigos and Raul Zuniga realize their dreams. Here, they share their story.

We have so much to thank YORHealth for! We met during a YORHealth business presentation. At that moment, both of us were going through difficult times. Maika had been struggling for a long time trying to build a home and give Nathalia, Pablo, Constanza and Patch, the best principles, values and options, paying a high price in absences and guilt. I used to say I was a free soul, did not own anything that did not fit in my car, but seeking for a better road in life.

Since we decided to align our life purposes through YORHealth, it has been a challenging and happy journey. I fell deeply in love with Maika and the family and what this new YORHealth lifestyle represented, so one day I decided to sell all my belongings and move to Mexico, leave my old habits and follow the same philosophy and path in YORHealth. Maika was not used to relying on anyone to take care of her, or the kids and the future. It took me a long time to show her she was on safe ground.

It has already been a year since we made this decision to join the YORHealth team, and we have seen changes in all aspects. At home, things are easier, we share responsibility and it is amazing how all of us started a new life and belong together. We are full-time parents, partners and soul mates. It just seems that we both found our place.

Building our YORHealth team, we are able to embody the Power of Two. We are adding value to each other, by enhancing our strengths and abilities together. Our YORHealth business grew faster this year than ever before and a lot comes from feeling that we have each other’s back. We have been able to unlock our potential through YORHealth and find a way to help others who are following us. Bills are more than paid, following the YORHealth principles about truth and happiness. Finally, we can feel balance in our relationship, we had great help from Michael Mo at YORHealth, the best human being we know, who showed us with his kind ways, how to communicate and respect each other. We are certain that we want to spend our lives together, setting an example for our two girls and two boys so they can live the best life parents can offer.

We can say that running for Blue Diamond last year, was the best decision. This allowed us to build a team and more relationships with extraordinary YORHealth friends (thank you Soraya and Agustin) and to spend quality time with YORHealth Co-Founder, Dennis Wong, our personal friend and mentor, growing our friendship and learning from the most refined group of people we have ever known.

A Conversation with Wesley Upchurch on the History of Video Games

Wesley Upchurch

Wesley Upchurch

Today we talk to Wesley Upchurch about the history of video games. Wesley Upchurch is the owner/operator of Gunther’s Games in Columbia, Missouri.

Interviewing Experts: We sort of take it for granted that video games have been around forever. How far back do they really go?

Wesley Upchurch: Farther than I thought, really; all the way back in 1947. An engineer filed a patent on a “cathode ray tube amusement device.”

Interviewing Experts: Wow! What was that primitive video game like?

Wesley Upchurch: The player had a WWII-style radar screen and could fire at “airborne” targets by using buttons and knobs.

Interviewing Experts#: Did it ever make it to market?

Wesley Upchurch: No, but the ball was rolling. Another television engineer had the idea of a home video game all the way back in 1951, but his boss killed the idea.

Interviewing Experts#: Well, what about computer video games?

Wesley Upchurch: Yes, there were computer video games for the earliest computers, but little is known about them since all those early, primitive computers are long gone. There was a game that came along in 1961, though.

Interviewing Experts: What game was that?

Wesley Upchurch: The game was called Spacewar, and it was developed by students at MIT. It was a two-player game involving spacecraft, missiles and stars.

Interviewing Experts: Wow, that sounds a lot like later arcade games.

Wesley Upchurch: Yes, and it was patented and even swapped among universities, as that’s pretty much the only place that had early computers back then. They were for the old PDP-1 computer, for Electrical Engineering departments of colleges.

Interviewing Experts: When did home games start to come around?

Wesley Upchurch: That was in the 70s, when the first generation of video games came to the market. The Magnavox Odyssey was just about the first on the scene back then.

Interviewing Experts: What were some of those early game titles?

Wesley Upchurch: Space Invaders, Galaxy, Gun Fight were all really early games. They were simple and primitive, but that’s what broke the market open and pointed the way.

Interviewing Experts: Well, when did the arcade game come online?

Wesley Upchurch: Remember that there had always been arcade games, but all-electronic arcade video games didn’t really get their start until 1978.

Interviewing Experts: What was the groundbreaking arcade game, then?

Wesley Upchurch: No question, it was Space Invaders. It was huge for the time. They went on to sell over 360,000 arcade cabinet versions of that game.

Interviewing Experts: What were the other games in that first generation?

Wesley Upchurch: Galaxian, Pac-Man and Asteroids were also in that first wave of games. The technology advanced really quickly from there, though.

Interviewing Experts: Yes, they’re a pretty far cry from what came later.

Wesley Upchurch: Run-and-gun games, cinematic platforms, action role-play games were all in the next wave.

Interviewing Experts: I imagine modern kids would get bored with those early games pretty quickly.

Wesley Upchurch: Yes, but there’s always going to be a nostalgia aspect to playing them, too. You’d be surprised how many older players just love putting in time on a Frogger or Defender game!

The Benefits of Asset Management

Q: What types of asset management are there, and why is their growth important?

A: There are many forms of asset management. These include physical asset management, fixed assets management, infrastructure assets management, IT asset management and digital asset management. The best asset management should achieve a number of different goals.

Operating and sustaining these assets within a budget requires some form of prioritization. First, it must help managers maximize the potential of their assets. It must also indicate which assets need further attention, along with the assets that have failed to produce.

Quite simply, asset management encourages all involved to seek better value from the company’s assets. In the end, this process will increase productivity and improve competitive performance.

Q: What tools are necessary in asset management?

A: The tools used for asset management should offer the calculation of risks associated with assets. They will also provide necessary data storage and an accurate control over inventory. Given constantly changing technology and the wealth of competition, smart decision-making is crucial in asset management.

The most successful asset management requires that both the intangible and physical assets of an organization are used to their fullest potential. This strategy runs across any number of disciplines, from engineering to production, to administration and information management.

Q: How should a company start the asset management process?

A: Asset management growth doesn’t happen overnight. Although the process might seem difficult at first, the results are worth it. Asset management continues to undergo an evolution, and the most successful industry experts will comprehend this. Only then will the strongest results for the whole organization be possible. Both production and labor will be more efficient, the cost of owning fixed assets will be reduced, and the downtime on facilities and equipment will be minimized.

At this point, a company is then given the chance to address areas that require improvement, asking for assistance from its trusted management solution experts to use beneficial management tools. Many public asset management firms provide help in establishing an effective process.

Scott Safadi Cautions Overeager Homebuyers

Scott Safadi

Scott Safadi

Scott Safadi is a real estate professional specializing in property management in Silicon Valley. Scott Safadi knows a boom or a bust when he sees one. As Scott Safadi explains, the housing market is starting to sizzle at a remarkable rate in a few pockets around the country, including his home base in California. In this conversation, Scott Safadi warns potential homebuyers not to get so caught up that they miss the forest for the trees.

Interviewing Experts: Tell readers about your company, CBPM.

Scott Safadi: CBPM is a property management company that serves apartment owners and tenants in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Interviewing Experts: Describe what you have seen happening with the housing market in Silicon Valley.

Scott Safadi: It’s amazing. It really feels like the early 2000s again in Silicon Valley.

Interviewing Experts: So things are hot on the housing front?

Scott Safadi: Yes, houses are selling for way over list price and sellers are getting multiple offers again, some have gotten hundreds of offers.

Interviewing Experts: How much over list price have houses sold for in your area?

Scott Safadi: It is not uncommon for houses to sell for 20 percent over list price right now.

Interviewing Experts: What has sparked this housing activity?

Scott Safadi: A number of factors come into play. There are fewer houses for sale, as owners who were underwater are still recovering and hoping to sell for profit. Also, new home construction is just starting to crawl back.

Interviewing Experts: Have low interest rates helped spur home buying?

Scott Safadi: Yes, record low interest rates and low home prices are attracting people who are financially able, looking to upgrade, or want to get into a home for the first time.

Interviewing Experts: This sounds like a good thing, isn’t it?

Scott Safadi: Yes and no. It’s a great sign that the economy is recovering. On the other hand, people get attached to a boom and bust mentality and it can be devastating.

Interviewing Experts: Can you explain what that means?

Scott Safadi: Buyers get enamored with the thrill of the hunt. In bidding wars for example, buyers end up paying a lot more just because they want to have the winning bid.

Interviewing Experts: What if it’s the perfect house for the buyer?

Scott Safadi: Work with an agent who has your best financial interests in mind, not just their commission. And, hold on, as it could be a bumpy ride.

Interviewing Experts: How do homebuyers choose a good agent?

Scott Safadi: Get a personal referral. Talk to family and friends; they offer the best connections.

Interviewing Experts: What advice do you have for homebuyers?

Scott Safadi: A cautionary tale: Don’t buy out of your price range, consider many different properties, and don’t let a bidding war entice you to spend more than you can afford.

Interviewing Experts: Thanks for your advice!

Scott Safadi: Glad to help homebuyers avoid the disasters of 2008.

About Scott Safadi:

Scott Safadi is a Northern California native who currently lives in Saratoga with his wife and daughter. Scott Safadi experienced both the boom and bust of the housing market in Silicon Valley through the purchase of his own home in 2007 and through his property management business, CBPM. When not immersed in real estate, Scott Safadi enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, and backpacking.

Travis Jones of Rush Properties Says Johnson County Is a Hot Market

Travis Jones Rush Properties

Travis Jones Rush Properties

Located just outside the Kansas City metro area, Johnson County is one of the top 20 counties in per capita income nationwide. Travis Jones of Rush Properties explains current housing trends in this Midwestern jewel.

According to Travis Jones of Rush Properties, Johnson County, Kan., is notable for having three of the top 100 best cities to live in according to Money Magazine. Today, the county is still considered one of the best places to live in the United States and is currently enjoying remarkable market conditions for both buyers and sellers, says Travis Jones, Rush Properties founder.

Understanding the market

Travis Jones of Rush Properties explains that the market can be a confusing concept for many people. There are numbers and statistics that don’t seem to make sense. Travis Jones of Rush Properties explains that it isn’t that difficult when you break it down into layman terms. Using Johnson County as an example, Travis Jones of Rush Properties sites April 2013 statistics.

  • Median versus average list price was $283,425 in Johnson County, which means that exactly half of the homes listed were above that price point.
  • Average list price, which Travis Jones of Rush Properties reports was $368,059, is the average price of all homes on the market.
  • DOM is an acronym for Days on Market. Travis Jones of Rush Properties clarifies that the average DOM for Johnson County was 77 days.
  • Price per square foot was $115. Price per square foot is calculated according to heated and cooled space in the home, explains Travis Jones, Rush Properties founder.
  • MAI stands for Market Action Index. According to Travis Jones of Rush Properties, the MAI measures the amount of inventory versus the number of buyers. In Johnson County during April, the MAI was just under 40. Travis Jones, Rush Properties founder, explains that this indicates a seller’s market.

A strong market

Travis Jones of Rush Properties reports that Johnson County is an extremely stable market. With the number of sold homes and the number of listed homes virtually balancing themselves out, Travis Jones of Rush Properties notes that there are very few homes available at any given time.

Much like the rest of the U.S., Johnson County did suffer during the economic downturn of the mid-2000s. However, as Travis Jones of Rush Properties reports, the market has seen a steady recovery over the last few years. Johnson County is known for having an excellent school system and for offering a remarkable quality of life, which Travis Jones of Rush Properties explains has helped keep market value fair even during the worst of the recession.

Travis Jones of Rush Properties notes that there are many reasons that buyers and sellers alike should be confident in the Johnson County real estate market. With its close proximity to Kansas City, noteworthy landscapes, access to major highways, and reasonable property taxes, Travis Jones of Rush Properties insists that the county and its cities are positioned to remain the best places to live for many years to come.

Low interest rates

Despite being a sellers’ market, Travis Jones of Rush Properties reports that low interest rates also offer an advantage for buyers. Rates have hovered around 3.25 percent with even lower rates for shorter-term loans.

About Travis Jones and Rush Properties

Travis Jones of Rush Properties has been buying and selling homes in and around Johnson County for the last 15 years. Rush Properties works with Homeowner in foreclosure, offering alternative options.

Personal Protection from ID Theft

In a society where sharing mundane details of your personal life is the norm, you may be doing yourself more harm than good. Here are a few tips to help keep your personal information safe from ID thieves.

Criminals can acquire personal identification through a number of different privacy breaches. Typically, the perpetrators get the information directly from victims by fraudulently gathering information via trash piles, theft of personal documents from homes and vehicles, or—more brazenly—by pickpocketing or purse snatching.

While no one can guarantee they won’t become a victim of identity theft at some point, there are a few ways to help thwart would-be title takers.

Omit. The risk of ID theft can be mitigated partially by not offering too much personal information online or over the telephone. Many companies have a standard contact form that asks for a plethora of personal information. Often, many of these fields are not required but get completed anyway. A good rule here is offer only the information needed to complete a specific task at hand. Social Security cards should not be kept on one’s person and the number should not be filled out on medical or other forms not related to employment.

Destroy. Simply enough, destroying personal information keeps it out of the hands of criminals. A shredder is invaluable for getting rid of all documents. A word of warning: don’t throw the shredder’s wastebasket away without dividing it among a few different outgoing trash bags. A desperate criminal can—and will—piece together bits of information if they must.

Secure. When filling out a form online make sure that it’s on a secure and encrypted page. Double-check the web addresses and if it doesn’t begin with https (note the “s” on the end), it’s not a secure site. Also, PCs should be set at the highest possible security setting to guard against malware or invisible phishing schemes.

In recent years, many commercially available ID theft protection services have become available. These may offer some level of protection but cannot guard 100 percent against all forms of identity theft.

Charles Brennan Brings the Gift of Music to Kids in South Dakota

Charles Brennan

Charles Brennan

Charles Brennan, a Las Vegas, Nevada based entrepreneur, philanthropist, and longtime rock and roll enthusiast recently opened the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy with the Boys and Girls Club of Sioux Empire.  With a little help from several big-name friends, Charles Brennan presented a weeklong celebration to mark this grand occasion. Here, Interviewing Experts talks with Charles Brennan about this new program for kids.

Interviewing Experts:  Thanks so much for joining us today!  Please tell readers about this phenomenal program.

Charles Brennan:  This program means the world to me.  Through the Rock and Roll Academy, we are giving kids in need access to music lessons, equipment, and performance opportunities.

Interviewing Experts:  How did the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy come to be?

Charles Brennan:  I was in the business for years and have made some really good friends in the music industry.  After discussions with Alice Cooper and my son, who attended the School of Rock in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy was born.

Interviewing Experts:  Were you a performer?

Charles Brennan:  No, I never mastered an instrument, so I managed bands, opened a venue and promoted concerts.

Interviewing Experts:  Why Sioux Falls?

Charles Brennan:  I’ve lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for years, but Sioux Falls is my hometown.  I am so fortunate to be able to bring this program to kids in my old neighborhood.  I grew up just 6 blocks from the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy.

Interviewing Experts:  How do kids get involved?

Charles Brennan:  The Rock and Roll Academy will serve the kids who are members of the Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire.

Interviewing Experts:  Tell readers exactly what kids will be learning at the Academy?

Charles Brennan:  Everything we do will be focused on rock and roll.  Kids will take weekly music lessons on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and/or vocals and will rehearse with a band each week.

Interviewing Experts:  Will the kids perform as well?

Charles Brennan:  Yes, kids will have the opportunity to perform in front of a live crowd, just like real rock stars.

Interviewing Experts:  Incredible!  Tell readers what happened during the grand opening week.

Charles Brennan:  Some of my good friends performed to help open the Rock and Roll Academy in style.  George Lopez, Louie Anderson, Night Ranger, the “Pawn Stars”, Alice Cooper, and some members of Ratt, Warrant, the Doors, and Motley Crew all made appearances.  Even Gene Simmons of KISS made a surprise appearance on March 30th and performed.

Interviewing Experts:  How did the community get involved?

Charles Brennan:  The kick-off concerts were open to the public.  The facility was open for tours on Friday and, with a phone call ahead, visitors are welcome anytime.

Interviewing Experts:  What are you hoping the Brennan Rock and Roll Academy will accomplish?

Charles Brennan:  At the very heart of this program, we are committed to helping kids dream big and be successful in life.  Maybe they become rock stars, maybe not.  The journey, through lessons, teamwork, and performance, will give them skills that will guide them through life.  That’s what’s important.

Charles Brennan, former owner of The Blitz Ballroom and concert promoter, is the Founder and CEO of Las Vegas, Nevada based Dollar Loan Center and founder of Clark County Collection Services.  Charles Brennan and his family reside in Las Vegas, Nevada.
