Paul Kadri Offers Tips on Good Vendor Relationships

Paul-Kadri-HandshakeFor more than 19 years Paul Kadri has been a manager in both government and education. Trying to get the most resources out of the money available has been a goal each and every year. In this interview, Paul Kadri offers some thoughts on what has brought him success in working with vendors to develop win-win opportunities.

Interviewing Experts: You have been a manager for many years. In what areas have you worked with vendors?

Paul Kadri: There are probably too many areas to even remember. Obviously one thinks of computers, custodial supplies, and office supplies. But that can also include mowing grass, consulting services, etc.

Interviewing Experts: Is there something that they all have in common?

Paul Kadri: Two things they have in common: one of them is identical in every organization and the other could be different but it still exists. The identical component is the reality that vendors need to make money. If they lose money working with you, you’re unlikely to get the best service. The other commonality is that every company has their “nature.” This means that they have a way of doing business that may be slightly different from how others do business.

Interviewing Experts: Why is understanding these two components important for vendor relations?

Paul Kadri: A business is nothing more than a collection of people. If you have a worker that reports to you, they will be more motivated the more they believe that you understand them as an individual and are looking out for them. In the same way, a vendor will be more motivated to help you if they feel that you are looking out for them.

Interviewing Experts: Let’s start with the first component you mentioned. Isn’t it a given that all vendors want to make money?

Paul Kadri: Of course vendors want to make money. Opposite of that, we want to spend less and get more. The trick in the relationship is to find the place where the vendor is happy with the money they make, and we are happy with the services we receive. By understanding how the vendor makes money, I was able to find opportunities to get the best value from them.

Interviewing Experts: Can you give an example of how you did that?

Paul Kadri: Sure. Most organizations have a sales force. A salesperson has a sales plan. It would not be uncommon for me to sit down with the salesperson and talk about their sales plan. There may be certain products that the company is trying to sell more than others. If that is a product that I would like to have, then not only will I get a better price for that product, but I help the salesperson reach their goals, which makes them more responsive to my needs.

Interviewing Experts: It sounds obvious, but at the same time, it almost sounds underhanded?

Paul Kadri: I can assure you that finding a win-win solution with your vendor is celebrated on both sides.

Interviewing Experts: Let’s talk about your second point. What did you mean about the nature that exists within an organization?

Paul Kadri: It is impossible to specify what the different nature will look like, except to say that each organization will have its unique characteristics that influence how to create the best relationship. Let me offer a simple example. There’s a computer manufacturer whose fiscal year ends in February rather than December. Companies are more likely to give deeper discounts at their fiscal year end. By changing when we purchased, we were able to get significantly more for our dollar, and the company was actually happier.

Interviewing Experts: That seems so obvious. Were you taught that or did you come up with the strategy?

Paul Kadri: No one taught it to me, and I do believe I’m one of the few people who operates this way. It originates from two things: First, I was a salesman for a brief period of time and know the stress that they are under; and second, I believe that direct communication is the best way to find a win-win scenario.

Interviewing Experts: Your concept sounds great, but I was always under the impression that competition was the best way to get value?

Paul Kadri: Some people do firmly believe that you get the best value by playing one vendor off of another vendor to get the lowest price. I strongly disagree with that. While one may get the lowest upfront price by having that competition, I believe I get much greater value by having a relationship with a vendor like I describe above. There are always times when you need a vendor to fix a problem or to address a crisis. By having a relationship, managing those circumstances becomes easy and cheap.

Interviewing Experts: Have you ever gotten any feedback from vendors?

Paul Kadri: Absolutely. As a matter fact, Dell Computer valued this approach so much, that they let me speak to their sales force and asked me to sit on their national advisory committee.

Interviewing Experts: Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

Paul Kadri: Someone could be reading this and wondering how I got around state purchasing laws, given that I worked in the public sector. One always has to make sure to remain within the laws. With the states in which I worked, one could always negotiate with a vendor as long as the price of the item was below the state contract price. Please check your state’s rules and understand them thoroughly.

Interviewing Experts: Have you ever thought about having a workshop on vendor relationships?

Paul Kadri: I think I will do that after I retire. For right now, I would like to continue getting the best deals for the organizations in which I work.

Paul Kadri has been a highly successful public school administrator for 16 years. In addition to exceeding expectations, Paul Kadri is known for creative vision and the ability to solve complex problems.

Aldo Disorbo Suggests Toys for Tots as Charity for Businesses to Support

Aldo-Disorbo-Christmas-Presents-Interviewing-ExpertsNationwide Relocation Services founder Aldo Disorbo says the Toys for Tots charity makes a difference to underprivileged children every year. Here, the Fort Lauderdale-based businessman talks to Interviewing Experts about his experience with the organization.

Interviewing Experts: Thank you for being here today. We know you are busy.

Aldo Disorbo: The pleasure is all mine.

Interviewing Experts: First, can you tell us a bit about your business for our readers?

Aldo Disorbo: I’m the owner of Nationwide Relocation Services. We’re a moving brokerage firm. We help customers find the right moving company that can work with their budget and specific relocation needs.

Interviewing Experts: Very interesting. Do most people have trouble finding their own moving company?

Aldo Disorbo: Absolutely—there are literally thousands of moving companies out there and more pop up every day. It can be mind-blowing.

Interviewing Experts: Let’s talk about your company’s charitable giving. Do you have a specific organization that you work with?

Aldo Disorbo: Nationwide Relocation Services works with many charitable organizations for many causes. But, the one that is nearest and dearest to my heart is Toys for Tots.

Interviewing Experts: Why’s that?

Aldo Disorbo: Toys for Tots provides hope to some of the country’s most needy children.

Interviewing Experts: How so?

Aldo Disorbo: Well, Christmas is a magical time for most people. It can, however, be a time of great distress for many families facing financial difficulties. The Toys for Tots program and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves keep the magic alive by helping these families have a good Christmas morning.

Interviewing Experts: And Nationwide Relocation Services has partnered with Toys for Tots before?

Aldo Disorbo: Yes, absolutely. Thinking back, 2009 was probably our most successful year working with the charity. Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated staff and affiliates, we collected more than 500 toys for deserving children.

Interviewing Experts: No doubt that helped many families.

Aldo Disorbo: I’m proud to say there were a few hundred children waking up that morning to something special.

Interviewing Experts: How did people get toys to you?

Aldo Disorbo: Our employees brought in toys and opened up our office in Fort Lauderdale to the public as a drop-off point.

Interviewing Experts: When does Toys for Tots begin their toy drive?

Aldo Disorbo: They start every year in October and finish in mid-December.

Interviewing Experts: How long has Toys for Tots been around?

Aldo Disorbo: Toys for Tots was actually founded in 1947. The organization collected more than 5,000 toys its first year.

Interviewing Experts: We understand the Toys for Tots logo was designed by someone with quite a famous name?

Aldo Disorbo: Yes, in 1948 none other than Walt Disney himself designed the logo that features the caboose of the train and two rail cars. Over the last 50 years it has become an iconic symbol for the charity.

Interviewing Experts: How widespread is the Toys for Tots program?

Aldo Disorbo: Toys for Tots is found in all 50 states.

Interviewing Experts: How are children chosen to be recipients?

Aldo Disorbo: Parents can request help from the Toys for Tots website. Around Christmas, Toys for Tots coordinators work with welfare agencies and other groups to determine where the greatest need is.

Interviewing Experts: Can individuals volunteer with the program?

Aldo Disorbo: Yes. From what I understand they accept volunteers everywhere that they have an office or warehouse.

Interviewing Experts: What opportunities are available?

Aldo Disorbo: There are many different ways to help. Of course, you can always donate a toy—a drop-off location is never hard to find. Additionally, a Toys for Tots event can be held at a private home or office.

Interviewing Experts: You seem very passionate about this charity.

Aldo Disorbo: I am—this is one that I definitely recommend that all businesses, and especially those with great social connections, support. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you helped a child, and what better way than to make them smile on Christmas morning.

Interviewing Experts: We appreciate your time today. Thanks to you and Nationwide Relocation Services for all you’re doing for children in our communities.

Aldo Disorbo has had a passion for moving since his teens. He founded his first moving company with nothing more than an old beat-up truck and a dream. Today, Nationwide Relocation Services is the nation’s largest provider of third-party moving services in the country.

London Piano Institute Sheds Light on Ludwig van Beethoven

London-Piano-Institute-Ludwig-Van-BeethovenThe tragic loss of Beethoven’s hearing didn’t thwart his desire to combine sounds, says London Piano Institute. In today’s interview, the staff of Interviewing Experts speaks with London Piano Institute and Celine Gaurier-Joubert about the tumultuous life of this classical composer.

Interviewing Experts: Good morning, we are so happy to have you here.

London Piano Institute: Thank you for the opportunity.

Interviewing Experts: We’re here to talk about one of the most notable classic composers ever, Beethoven. Is his music important to your institute?

London Piano Institute: Yes, absolutely. He remains an inspiration for our students.

Interviewing Experts: You teach Beethoven at London Piano Institute?

London Piano Institute: We do. In fact, he is quite a popular topic of both conversation and study.

Interviewing Experts: Can you tell us a bit about him?

London Piano Institute: Beethoven was born in Germany in the winter of 1770. His father was a musician and taught his surviving children as much as he could about melody.

Interviewing Experts: Surviving children?

London Piano Institute: Tragically, Beethoven was only one of three surviving children for the elder Beethoven and his wife. The couple lost four infants at birth.

Interviewing Experts: Quite sad; could this have influence his work?

London Piano Institute: Perhaps, but his life was steeped in turmoil, including the later loss of a brother and a nasty custody battle over his nephew.

Interviewing Experts: Was he married?

London Piano Institute: No, he never wed. He did, however, have one notable love interest, one Countess Giulietta Guicciardi.

Interviewing Experts: Why did the two not wed?

London Piano Institute: He was not of noble birth. He also fell in love with fellow musician Therese Malfatti, but common speculation suggests social constraints denied him romantic bliss once again.

Interviewing Experts: She is the dedicatee of his Für Elise, right?

London Piano Institute: Possibly, but it is not formally noted. Historians have it narrowed to several possible love interests.

Interviewing Experts: As a composer at the time, how did Beethoven earn a living?

London Piano Institute: The vast majority of his income stemmed from patrons who commissioned works from the musician. His largest supporter was Archduke Rudolph. Other revenue came from performances and publications. Unfortunately, he had a limited income before his death.

Interviewing Experts: It has been said that Beethoven had a rather strong personality.

London Piano Institute: He did, indeed. He had a wanton disregard for authority and a lack of respect for social stigma. He liked things a certain way and caused a stir more than once. Very telling of his personality is the fact that Archduke Rudolph actually made a public decree that proper court etiquette constraints did not apply to the musician.

Interviewing Experts: That’s very interesting. Unfortunately, that’s all the time we have today. Thank you for speaking with us.

London Piano Institute is directed by master pianist Celine Gaurier-Joubert who founded the school based on the belief that adult learners could master the piano despite previous musical experience. Celine Gaurier-Joubert offers instruction in a variety of musical genres.

Sleep as an Essential Element of Overall Health

Sleep is an essential part of a healthy life, just as much as a well-balanced diet or regular exercise. However, many Americans suffer from periods of sleeplessness at one time or another due to external factors. The stresses and pressures of daily routines can cause bad sleep habits. Major life events such as graduations, weddings and job losses also contribute to sleep deprivation. A lack of sleep does not simply decrease a person’s energy level – it can create damage to the cells and cause a greater risk of body fat. Most of this body fat is stored in the abdominal area, and might bring about serious diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Most health experts suggest avoiding alcohol and cigarettes immediately before bed. The nicotine in cigarettes is a stimulant that produces nervousness and jitteriness, similar to the effects of chocolate or coffee. Although alcohol puts the user in a calm frame of mind for a short time, it generally interrupts the nervous system and could lead to cases of night-waking.

The bedroom should be a place where an individual feels able to relax and unwind from a long day. A bedroom should be rid of such items as computers, televisions and other technological devices. People can ease into a nighttime routine by adjusting the room temperature to a comfortable level, which will aid in falling asleep – and staying that way. Even better, purchase a ceiling fan or a white noise machine that provides a peaceful, soothing sound.

Eating dinner well before bedtime will also help an individual fall asleep much easier. Eating right before bed often causes digestive problems as well as insomnia and heartburn. Additionally, working out before bed can create feelings of anxiety and restlessness. Endorphin levels will elevate and heart rate will increase, so the body feels awake. Schedule a workout for the morning or in the early afternoon.

Although these tips have all proven effective in improving sleep patterns, the most crucial piece of advice for poor sleepers is to try a number of different options in the hopes of finding a cure that works.
